Pour la quatrième année consécutive, les équipes de designer de l’In Situ Lab investissent les bibliothèques rurales du réseau BDBR (Bibliothèque départementale du Bas-Rhin) pour répondre aux problématiques soulevées par les différents lieux.
Nous, l’équipe publique, avons écoulé notre résidence dans un contexte bien particulier, celui de la petite ville de Bischheim et de son tiers-lieu culturel habitant plusieurs fonctions : la cour des Bœcklin.
For the fourth year in a row, the In Situ Lab's design teams are investing rural libraries in the BDBR network (Departmental Library of Bas-Rhin) to work on the issues raised by the various places.
We have passed our residence in a very particular context : the small town of Bischheim and its cultural third place occupying several functions, the Bœcklin court(CDB).
Après avoir interrogé le lieu ainsi que ses habitants et ses usagers avec le peu de temps que notre résidence nous offrait, la situation nous est apparue clairement : Le lieu est fréquenté, quoique peu, pour sa bibliothèque bien qu’il abrite également un jardin, un musée juif et une salle d’exposition, cette dernière réputée élitiste. Cependant, l’ouverture proche de la médiathèque nord, immense infrastructure, dans la ville voisine menace cet usage. Enfin, la commune n’est pas riche et le maire ne souhaite pas réinjecter d’argent dans le domaine de la culture, à moins qu’on ne le convainque.
Dans ce contexte sensible, notre équipe a formulé les problématiques suivantes pour échafauder son projet :
Comment changer l’image de la Cour des Bœcklin afin de la faire rayonner à l’échelle de la ville ?
Comment unifier ses différentes fonctions ?
Comment créer un lieu de vie et de culture de proximité complémentaire de la médiathèque Nord ?
Nous avons choisi de proposer un projet amenant à rêver le lieu et ses usages en le divisant en trois temporalités, de la plus faisable à la plus audacieuse, afin de faire passer l’utopie comme la suite logique de la réalisation.
After questioning the place as well as its inhabitants and users with the limited time that our residence offered, the situation became clear : the place is frequented, not even that much, for its library although it also has a garden, a Jewish museum, and an exhibition hall, which is known as elitist. However, the soon opening of the North media library, huge infrastructure in the neighboring city threatens this use. Finally, the municipality is not rich and the mayor does not wish to reinject money in the field of culture unless he is convinced. In this sensitive context, we build our project around those issues:
How to change the image of the CDB to make it spread at the scale of the city?
How to unify its different functions?
How to create a place of life and culture of proximity which completes the use of the North media library?
We have chosen to propose a project leading to dreaming of the place and its uses by dividing it into three temporalities, from the most feasible to the most daring, in order to make the utopia pass as the logical continuation of the realization.
L’équipe de la CDB, enthousiaste et dynamique, nous a accompagné le long de notre projet et nous a permis de participer à une réunion citoyenne le 20 janvier 2018. Nous avons pu prendre conscience de l’ampleur du changement à venir et travailler au plus proche des usagers de la CDB en échangeant avec eux autour de notre projet-outil en cette occasion.
The enthusiastic and dynamic CDB team accompanied us throughout our project and allowed us to participate in a citizens' meeting on January 20, 2018. We became aware of the magnitude of the upcoming change and work towards closer to the users of the CDB by exchanging with them around our project-tool on this occasion.
Que peut-on faire dès demain, sans financement, pour améliorer la visibilité de la CDB dans Bischheim pour attirer un nouveau publique et montrer le dynamisme de la structure ?
Créer une charte graphique spécifique au lieu qui puisse accompagner chaque élément de communication. Le logo de la CDB se divise en quatre logos distincts pour chaque fonction du lieu afin de marquer son unification.
Installer un jeu de piste menant à la CDB dans la ville à l'aide de stickers humoristiques reprenant des personnalités culturelles.
What can be done tomorrow, without funding, to improve the visibility of the CDB in Bischheim to attract a new public and show the dynamism of the structure?
Create a site-specific graphic charter to accompany each element of communication. The CDB logo is divided into four distinct logos, one for each function of the place, in order to mark its unification.
Installation of a guided path leading to the CDB in the city with humorous stickers featuring cultural personalities.
These relay points are materialized by book trees in the city. This urban piece of furniture, made of welded sheet metal, allows book exchanges, to sit, to be informed and other informal uses according to the inhabitants' needs. Its form takes up the tradition of "the palaver tree", a tradition of Central Africa, a tree under which stories are told and the people discuss the political and social life of the village. That's what we want for our trees.
Dans un second temps, en 2020, avec un petit budget, le jeu de piste est perpétué de façon pérenne. Ce sont toujours des citations issues du milieu culturel mais cette fois-ci caligrafiées à même l'asphalte (ici testé à la craie) lors d'un atelier participatif avec les riverains. Le chemin mène non seulement à la CDB mais également à des points relais de celle-ci.
Ces points relais sont materialisés par des arbres à livres disposés aux quatre coins de la ville. Ce mobilié urbain en tôle soudée permet l'échange de livre, l'assise, l'information et bien d'autres usages informelles selon les besoins des habitants. Sa forme reprend la tradition de "l'arbre à palabre", tradition d'Afrique centrale, un arbre sous lequel on conte des histoires et où le peuple discute de la vie politique et sociale du village. C'est ce que nous voulons pour nos arbres.
Enfin, dans plusieurs années, quand la Cour des Bœcklin sera devenue un pôle culturel apprécié et fréquenté par tous les habitants de Bischheim, Nous projetons d'y ajouter une extension. Une verrière qui relierait la salle d'exposition et la bibliothèque et qui abriterait un café. Celui-ci pourrait être ouvert indépendemment des autres bâtiments, héberger des événements et être le lieu de rencontre entre les habitants qui manque tant dans la ville pour le moment.
Finally, in several years, when the Court of Boecklin will become a cultural center appreciated and frequented by all the inhabitants of Bischheim, we plan to add an expansion. A canopy that would link the showroom and library, including a cafe. It could be open independently of other buildings, host events and be the meeting place between locals which is a lack in the city at the moment.
In a second time, in 2020, with a small budget, the guided path is perpetuated perennially. These are always quotations from the cultural milieu but this time handwrote directly on the ground (here tested with chalk)
during a participatory workshop with residents. The path leads not only to the CDB but also to relay points of it.
